Would Alice in Chains have jumped on the Nü-Metal trend if Layne was still alive?
Nü-Metal, love it or hate it, it did kind of capture the world for a hot minute around the Y2K era (late 90s - early 2000s)
Certain OG Metal bands/musicians jumped on it for a moment like Sepultura, Fear Factory, Slayer, MetallicA, Dimebag starting Damageplan, Ozzy getting featured in Coal Chamber, etc.
Some Grunge musicians took part in it, with Scott Weiland of STP featuring himself on Hold On by limp bizkit, Chris Cornell joining Linkin Park for a few live concerts, etc.
And the Nü-Metal band Taproot apparently were gonna feature Layne Staley, but that was around the time he tragically passed away, which the singer alleges he still has a recording of Layne’s vocals.
All of this in mind can’t help but make me wonder if Layne was still alive & Alice in Chains continued making music into the 2000s, would Layne have pushed the group into Nü-Metal sounds?
I have noticed Jerry Cantrell songs of AiC tend to be more introspective & atmospheric, while Layne’s are more direct & heavy, it almost feels like something Layne would have pushed for, BUT I don’t want to put words in a deadman’s mouth, so I want to know what your thoughts would be?
