Novice centering

Ive been throwing for about month now, and am trying to focus on a simple cylinder mug to figure it out. What was an “aha” moment for you when starting? I can’t seem to get past a wonky uneven lip. Am I rushing past centering? Or entering and pulling my walls too quick? I appreciate any constructive criticism! Thank you
