Friend says she’s getting a u-visa on grounds of domestic violence charges she put against her spouse

I have a friend who told me that she put her spouse in jail on false statements so she could be eligible for a u-visa and eventually get citizenship in the US. They came here on a business visa, but then they applied for asylum like 5 years ago. She went to a non profit and put in an application but this feels wrong. Does uscis throughly investigate these matters?
