Birthday Party has made me admit something I didn’t want to accept about the band
I’ve tried listening to it so many times, it’s just not growing on me. There’s nothing there for me to fall in love with like I have done with soooo many of their other songs. It feels more like an unused B-side that got cut from an album, let alone a major single to promote their upcoming tour.
Since Amazing Things, it seems like their songwriting has got way more simple and repetitive, the hooks of songs are usually the same word/phrase repeated over and over again while a huge dirty riff plays in the background. I thought the singles for Amazing Things were amazing, but everything else was painfully mid and forgettable.
I’m a massive metal fan so I’m obviously not complaining about the band getting heavier, and I do think Amazing Things has some absolute bangers, but it definitely feels like the actual quality and complexity of their songs has gone downhill. It feels like they’re just trying to be a meme band with the wackiest lyrics and music videos possible instead of a band who creates art they are passionate about. I don’t care if there’s some humour in their style, but I don’t like it when it feels like the humour is taking priority over writing genuinely interesting music.
Obviously you can say this is an overreaction based on just one single coming out that I don’t enjoy, but I still think my point about their shift in direction as a band is very valid. I worry that they might become a bit of a parody of themselves.
