Upside down drying

New here so apologies if this is redundant! I have fine hair, it’s wavy, density is on the thinner side and it gets kinda…fluffy. The ends eventually break and get see through if I don’t stay on top of my trims. That kind of hair.

I saw that a lot of you are blow drying upside down, which I tried. I was very pleased with the volume, but how are we smoothing it out? Mine was looking a little fried after not smoothing cuticle down, but the roots flattened out a quite bit when I attempted to smooth them.
