The Other Mortet
2018 Thierry Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Village
I’ve had few bottles from Thierry Mortet, and they’ve all suited my preferences for red Burgundy with a more fruit forward profile.
This bottle was drinking beautifully, and paired well with pan seared lamb and roasted potatoes. This wine had enough tannin and structure to pair well with a variety of foods, though. Not a funky/powerful Gevrey- red fruited and pleasurable.
Thierry’s wines have all possessed a dried cherry/raisin quality that I enjoy, all in a deliciously well balanced package. The balance of earth, fruit, and spice is perfect for my palate.
I’ve had his wines back to the 2013 vintage, and find they develop more earthiness with age, but the fruit is always present, if not dominant. AROMA is where these wines stand out- the perfume of every bottle I’ve opened is absolutely intoxicating. Dried red fruits and gentle spice leap out of the glass, always with an element of freshness and energy.
Seek out this producer if you enjoy this style- it’s a relatively good value in the HOT burgundy market.
Please let me know if you’ve got any producers up your sleeve who fit this bill.
Cheers! Happy Friday!
